Summer is moving along...

Wow, I can't believe my last post was almost a month ago. I have several videos I would love to post on here, but I can't figure out how to get them from my phone to this site. Kind of frustrating b/c it used to be easy. :( 

We've been trying to stay busy while also having some down-time. A few weeks ago, the church staff went to a Ranger game. It was AK's first and he did pretty well. Sad to say our TX Rangers are not doing very well this season. Regardless, it was fun to be with friends and eat hot dogs, nachos and cotton candy. :)


The 2nd week of June we had VBS at church. This was AC's first "official" year to go. She's gone for years now but only b/c I was working. She got to sing the theme song on Family Night with the other kids who had completed grades K-4. It's hard to see here, but she is on the bottom row with a black long sleeve shirt. (Next to the boy with a yellow striped shirt.) She had a great week with one of her best friend's in her class. EK and AK had fun too, although AK was really worn out by Thursday!


The next week AC had swim lessons with a friend from church. AC worked hard each day and really learned a lot by the end of the week. She's a much better swimmer now. Sarah offered to teach AK a few things too, like blowing bubbles in water and floating on his back. Hopefully we can go to a pool soon to practice again. It's just so hard for me to take my 3 kids by myself. In fact, it's just not safe! AC has gone with Keith to our neighborhood pool a couple times, so she hasn't been begging me to take her. :)

The past two weeks haven't consisted of too much. Some different appointments and we've recently added in another day of horse therapy for EK. We go on Wednesday morning now since she is off for the summer. Keith still takes her on Fridays too. Yesterday was the first day she rode a horse by herself! Her therapist leads the horse and someone else is on the side, but she did really well, I'm told. I'm hoping to get a few pictures next week when I take her. :)

That's about all we've been up to. Will try to be better about updates for those of you who check weekly. :) I've been trying to upload some of the cutest videos of AK. Just the cute things he said and such. I was just thinking the other day how his speech is maturing lately. He's still a little hard to understand at some times, but he's persistent and keeps trying until I get it. ;)

3 months ago today...

Most of you who are reading this know what our family is going through right now. It was 3 months ago today that we took EK to a developmental pediatrician. We left there with a diagnosis of autism. Even though we knew it was coming, it was tough to swallow. We've done so much research, reading books, searching on the internet, and talking with those who've been down the same road. There is so much information out there. We're trying to be proactive and do all we can to help her live a normal life and I'm praying like I've never prayed before. She's still our sweet 3 year old daugher, our firstborn. Her diagnosis doesn't change our love for her. I'm not even sure it changes our dreams for her. We know that God is able to completely heal her, but regardless of the outcome, we know that our God has a plan for her that will bring Him glory. I'm so thankful to be the mama to EK and AC. They are such sweet blessings, even on the hard days. :)

Autism Awareness Day

It's hard to believe this is our 10th Autism Awareness Day. Ironically, I also sat in EK's annual ARD this morning. To be honest, life is so busy right now that I haven't had time to think much about this day approaching. Maybe that's good. When I have too much time to think about how autism has changed our family's life, I sometimes get discouraged. When EK was first diagnosed in February 2009, we thought that if we got her in the right therapies, she'd start Kindergarten in a mainstream classroom. That was our goal and early on, it seemed doable. We changed her diet (which by the way, I don't regret at all. I truly believe it's helped her to be the happy child she is.), we did occupational therapy, speech therapy, ABA therapy, vitamins/supplements, school preschool program for kids with autism and many other things. Anticipating Christmas

 I have always loved Christmas! I love how we celebrated as a family growing up and have carried some of those traditions/memories into my family.  I love the music, the lights, the decorations, the anticipation to Christmas Eve/Christmas Day. When we were expecting EK, I remember talking about how we might celebrate Christmas. We both agreed we wanted to keep it simple and focus on the birth of Jesus. EK's regression in the fall of 2008 caused me to really simplify things. Many things were upsetting to her. Our activities and traditions have changed a little over the years as the kids have grown. When EK and AC were small, we read stories about Jesus's birth and Christmas, played with our Fisher Price Nativity set and listened to Christmas music. I've tried to add a new thing or two each year, while some things are EVERY year.
